VULKOLLAN^® press-on tyres for machine tunnelling

We have been providing wheels, castors and press-on tyres for tunnelling projects throughout the world for more than 20 years. Our VULKOLLAN^® press-on tyres were also used in the construction of the fourth tube of the Hamburg Elbe tunnel.

The fourth tube with a length of 2,560 m was constructed over the course of three and a half years. With an average speed of 6 m/day, approximately 400,000 m3 of sand, gravel and stones were cleared from the path.

The tunnel boring machine "TRUDE" (Tief Runter Unter Die Elbe – deep down underneath the Elbe) with a diameter of 14.2 m and a weight of more than 2,000 t was equipped with 400 x 152 mm VULKOLLAN^® press-on tyres.

16 press-on tyres were used per swivel arm and four press-on tyres per wheel. With profile-adjusted press-on tyres, high load capacities were reached with low area loading.
